Anti-aging products are everywhere. Advertisements on social media, tabloids, and commercials anywhere you look are selling you some skin product or solution to slow or reverse the signs of aging.

Skin is the largest organ in the body, and taking care of it can sometimes seem overwhelming. Choosing the right product can seem daunting with many lotions, creams, washes, and supplements. While I am a firm believer in marine collagen*, proper hygiene, and sun protection for aiding in skin health and appearance, there is something that everyone already has access to; it is free and will help your skin age gracefully!

EXERCISE!

Yes, your skin benefits from exercise! We already know that regularly engaging in physical activity can help maintain a healthy weight, reduce depression, improve mood, etc. And now, we can add wrinkle-reducing and anti-aging to the many benefits of exercise. How exciting is that??

Research shows that adults who lead active lifestyles vs. those who are sedentary have a thicker dermis (the deeper layer of skin) and a more significant amount of collagen in their skin. Collagen is the framework of skin integrity that aids in reducing the appearance of wrinkles, and is a buffer against bruising and tearing. The increase in collagen stored in the dermis may be due to blood flow or the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise on the body. When we exercise, we also increase blood and lymphatic flow, which helps reduce puffiness and inflammation, improving our overall skin tone and giving us a healthy glow.

Chronic stress can lead to skin issues, including psoriasis, acne, eczema, and alopecia (hair loss). Exercise indirectly benefits our skin by reducing stress hormones, cortisol, and adrenaline. By staying active, our bodies manage stress more effectively and reduce the signs of stress on our skin. Staying active is also an excellent way to boost endorphins, lifting your spirit and energy levels.

Exercise also improves our sleep, which is another indirect benefit to our skin. Frequent exercisers get around 7-9 hours of sleep compared to nonexercising individuals who get around 5-6 hours. When we sleep, our bodies heal and repair from the exposure to UV rays and the free radicals and oxidative stress we encounter daily. Without adequate sleep, our body cannot properly heal and detox from our environment, resulting in premature skin aging.

Another benefit reaped from exercise is muscle maintenance. Muscle atrophy affects everyone as they age. You will lose 2%-5% of muscle per decade after 30. However, it can slow down muscle decline with proper training and nutrition. The more muscles are used and stressed through resistance training, the more muscle we will have and hold on to, filling our skin and slowing our aging appearance.

The beautiful thing about this is that no right or wrong exercise exists! Whether you enjoy swimming, biking, lifting weights, walking, or taking a yoga class, whatever exercise you enjoy most and will do consistently is the best exercise! However, remember that resistance training, I.e., an exercise that causes you to lift or push with your muscles, is the most beneficial form of exercise to improve muscle growth and tone.
