Stevia, aspartame, saccharin, and acesulfame are just a few artificial sweeteners in various food products. You may be more familiar with their table names: equal, sweet n low, NutraSweet, and Splenda. Regardless of the name it goes by, artificial sweeteners are not all as innocent as you think they are.

Most commonly found in diet soda, snacks, low-calorie foods, and sugar-free sweets, artificial sweeteners provide a sugar substitute with virtually no calories, making them appear to be the healthier choice. Artificial sweeteners provide lower calories and less "sugar" to foods, but not without some ugly side effects.

Studies show that artificial sweeteners can increase your risk of many health problems, Including but not limited to depression, headaches, migraines, vision trouble, weight gain, cancer, and diabetes.
And if that's not enough for you to think twice about consuming artificial sweeteners, listen up. Artificial sweeteners are significantly sweeter than natural sugar, 200-20,000 times sweeter!

When you consume them regularly, your taste buds change, making it harder and harder for you to taste and enjoy the natural sweetness of foods such as fruit. Over time, your taste buds are so altered that you will struggle to enjoy many foods that are not artificially sweetened or processed. To top it off, when you consume artificial sweeteners, your body doesn't recognize the absence of calories, which means that it processes the fake sugar as natural sugar, making these "diet" foods not so diet.

In other words, you'll gain weight from the diet food the same as you would eating the real deal, but now you're also risking your health. And since your body thinks it has sugar with calories, you'll look for more sweets and snacks later in the day to make up for those missing calories.

Next time you reach for a so-called "diet" or "sugar-free" treat, make sure you check the label for these hidden bad guys and look for those sweetened with honey, maple syrup, or cane sugar. Even though you'll have more calories and sugar, you'll be making a wiser choice.
