We’ve all been there, the alarm goes off, and all you want is just a few more minutes of shut-eye. It seems pretty harmless so long as you won’t be late, but be wary of that little button…it may be causing you more harm than good.

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t even have the snooze button. We would all wake up at the exact right time, feeling rested and ready to start our day!

This, however, is not the case. There are deadlines for work, late nights, interrupted sleep from kids, snoring spouses, and other sleep disturbances. It’s no wonder we hit the snooze, seeking a little more rest. While it may seem to make sense, hitting the snooze button actually has the opposite effect we are looking for. When we hit the button and fall back asleep, our body releases sleep hormones, starts a new sleep cycle, and makes us extra groggy and disoriented, leading to a prolonged period of sleep inertia when we wake up. Waking up at the beginning of a sleep cycle can make us feel like we’ve gotten no sleep at all, even if we slept like a baby all night long.

But how can I stop hitting the snooze???

1. First things first…a good morning routine starts with a good night routine. Get in the habit of going to bed at the same time each night and aim for 7-8 hours of sleep so if you need to be up by 6 am, plan on being asleep no later than 11 pm. When you consistently head to bed at the same time, your body will adjust to the circadian rhythm, and you’ll start to get sleepy at the same time each night.

2. Leave your alarm on the other side of the room so that you have to get out of bed to turn it off. Better yet, leave it in the bathroom and splash your face with cool water to help wake you up.

3. Set your alarm for the latest time you need to get up so you’re forced to jump out of bed.

4. Write it down. When we write down goals, we are 80% more likely to follow through with them. Give it a month, stay consistent, and notice how your energy improves.
